Evacuees From Russian-Occupied Oleshky Arrive in Belarus
Residents of the devastated city of Oleshky, which is under Russian occupation, were taken out on Friday during a local ceasefire, BBC News reports. They have now arrived in Belarus.
What we know
- The evacuation took place during a local ceasefire.
- Those evacuated are Ukrainians from Oleshky.
- Their destination was Belarus, according to BBC News.
Why it matters
Local ceasefires are short, limited pauses that allow civilians to leave dangerous areas. They are often negotiated for a specific place and time, and they do not mean a wider halt to the fighting.
What to watch
Where evacuees go next, and any statements from the governments involved.
